If it had, right-wing, authoritarian Bolsonaro might well have beaten da Silva. Depending on the details of the electoral college, da Silva’s 1.8% win might not have been enough to keep Bolsonaro from being the college winner.
Had da Silva won in an electoral college system, there would
almost certainly have been some close state votes. Even with Brazil’s popular
vote system, Bolsonaro has refused to concede, claiming fraud. There is a real possibility
that his friends in a state or two would have been willing to “find 11,870 votes”
or such other number as would switch the electoral college count. Bolsonaro
might have had the muscle that Trump lacked.
In addition to extending the rape of the Amazon, a second Bolsonaro
term would very likely have led to the dismantling of Brazilian democracy.
